Suitable for steel structures and piping systems in low to very high corrosive environments and immersed environments. Recommended for use in offshore environments, refineries, power plants, bridges, high-rise buildings and mining equipment.

Paint film thickness per layer

Recommended standard specifications

• Dry thickness: 80 – 150 μm.

• Wet thickness: 150 – 280 μm.

• Theoretical coverage: 6.8 – 3.6 m 2 /l.

Surface Preparation 

To ensure long-term adhesion of the next layer, the surface must be clean, dry and free of other impurities.

 Jotun Penguard HB Grey paint application method

• Spray form: Use an anaerobic paint sprayer (airless spray).

• Brush/brush: Recommended for corner and small area patchwork. Be careful to achieve the specified dry thickness.

Mixing ratio (by volume) 

• Penguard HB Comp A  4 parts.

• Penguard Comp B 1 part.

Thinner/cleaning solvent:  Jotun Thinner No. 17 

Instruction data for paint sprayers

• Nozzle size (inch/1000): 13 - 23.

• Pressure at spray gun tip (min): 150 bar/2100 psi.

Drying and curing time

• Drying and curing times are determined under controlled temperature conditions and relative humidity below 85%, and at the average dry film thickness of the product. 

• Surface dry: the drying stage where when lightly pressed on the paint film, it will not leave fingerprints or feel sticky. 

• Walkable dry: the minimum time before a paint film can withstand being walked on without leaving marks or damage. 

• Dry to apply the next coat, minimum: the shortest recommended time before the next coat can be applied. 

• Dry/curing for use: minimum time before the paint film can be fully exposed to the use environment/medium. 

Reaction time and pot life after mixing 

• Paint temperature at 23°C:  Life time 8 hours.

Heat resistant

Maximum heat resistance time to peak 1 hour.

The temperatures listed above relate to protective properties only. The aesthetic performance of this industrial paint  film will be affected at these temperatures.

Please note that the ability of a paint film to withstand the heat of immersion in chemicals depends on the chemical and the length of immersion. The ability to withstand heat will be affected by the integrity of the paint system. It is important to ensure that the heat resistance of each coat is the same.

Product Compatibility 

Depending on the actual environment that the Jotun industrial primer system endures, many different types of primers and topcoats can be used in combination with this product. Some examples are below. Please contact Jotun for further details.

• Previous coat:  factory primer inorganic zinc silicate, epoxy, epoxy mastic, zinc epoxy, zinc silicate.

• Subsequent layer: acrylic, epoxy, polyurethane, polysiloxane, vinyl epoxy.

Storage 

 This industrial paint product needs to be stored according to each country's safety regulations. Store the product in a cool, dry place with good ventilation, away from heat sources and ignition devices. Product containers must be tightly closed. Transport carefully.

- Storage time at 23 degrees C 

• Penguard HB Comp A : 24 months.

• Penguard Comp B : 24 months.

In some markets, storage times may be shorter due to local regulations. The above information is a minimum storage time, after which it may be necessary to re-test the product before putting it into use.

Please follow the precautions listed on the paint can label of  Jotun Penguard HB Gray Industrial Paint . Use in well-ventilated conditions. Do not breathe paint dust. Avoid direct contact with skin. If it gets on skin, wash immediately with cleaning solution, soap and water. You must immerse your eyes in water and go to a medical facility immediately.

- Jotun industrial paint color fluctuations 

When this Jotun Industrial Paint product is used as an anti-rust or anti-fouling layer, the paint film may slightly change in color according to each production batch. These products may discolor and become chalky when exposed to sunlight and outdoor weather.
